Boston Dynamics, the US-based robotics design firm known for its robot dog Spot, has used OpenAI’s ChatGPT to enable Spot to “speak.” This was achieved by training Spot’s responses using ChatGPT and open-source large language models (LLMs). Spot has a speaker and text-to-speech capabilities to generate its responses. The robot uses Visual Question Answering models to answer questions about images it captures. Although Spot appears to “speak” by opening its “mouth,” it’s the text-to-speech capabilities that produce the answers audibly. This development demonstrates the potential of combining artificial intelligence with robotics to enhance human-robot interactions.
