Oklahoma law states that every Saturday and Sunday is considered a public holiday. If Christmas falls on a Tuesday, the eve is celebrated as a holiday. If it falls on Thursday, Boxing Day is also a holiday. Oklahoma also combines Washington and Lincoln`s birthdays on the third Monday in February and celebrates the holiday as President`s Day. Despite the fact that there is no law mandating such a benefit, many employers offer paid time off to their employees in Oklahoma. Some may also offer bonus pay to encourage employees to work on a public holiday. Oklahoma recognizes the same holidays that the federal government celebrates, including Memorial Day, Labor Day, and Veterans Day. If a holiday falls on a weekend, the holiday is celebrated the day before or the next day, depending on the day of the week on which the holiday falls. Civil servants are entitled to paid leave. If a government employee is required to work on a public holiday, he or she is entitled to a paid day off on another date or may request payment for the public holiday.
There are no laws in Oklahoma that require a private employer to offer paid time off, nor to pay a higher rate of pay if an employee must work on vacation or take time off at any other time the employee must work.
