The President of Women in Mining in Nigeria, Janet Adeyemi, has called for the prosecution of the Chinese nationals who were recently arrested for illegal mining in Osun and Zamfara states recently.
Adeyemi, in a statement on Thursday, said it is sabotage not to hand over the illegal miners to the Federal Government for prosecution.
She said: “Mining is still the exclusive right of the Federal government. The states should not run foul. According to the Mining Act of 2007, the Federal Government can sanction whoever is involved in illegal mining.
“If Osun State does not handover the Chinese to the FG for prosecution, it is contravening the law and it could be viewed as sabotage.”
Adeyemi said neglecting the law without penalties for illegal miners would continue to undermine the growth of the sector “and promote continuous recurrences of such illegal acts.”
