The Bollywood Icon and Anglo-American movie star, Irrfan Khan who featured several popular Movies including Slumdog Millionaire, Life of Pi, and Jurassic World has died in Mumbai.
The late 53 years old Irrfan Khan was a famous Bollywood star with recognizable success in the West. He was fondly known to his English-speaking audiences as the police inspector in Slumdog Millionaire, his role in Jurassic World and Life of Pi. He also featured in blockbuster movies such as Haider, Piku, and Hindi Medium.
Irrfan Khan on Tuesday had been hospitalized for colon infection in the intensive care unit of Mumbai’s Kokilaben Hospital. Unfortunately, the news of his death broke out on Wednesday morning.
“It’s saddening that this day, we have to bring forward the news of him passing away,” read the statement. “Irrfan was a strong soul, someone who fought till the very end and always inspired everyone who came close to him.”
As the death news of one of the most applauded stars who was also known for his humility and probity broke out, Indians including other actors, fans, and politicians around the globe could not hold back the pain of his death.
According to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi “Khan’s demise was a loss to the world of cinema and theatre. He will be remembered for his versatile performances across different mediums. My thoughts are with his family, friends, and admirers. May his soul rest in peace.”
A tweet from another Bollywood actor, Amitabh Bachchan reads that Khan’s death left a “huge vacuum”. “An incredible talent, a gracious colleague, a prolific contributor to the world of cinema … left us too soon.”
“The charisma you brought to everything you did was pure magic,” tweeted Priyanka Chopra. “Your talent forged the way for so many in so many avenues. You inspired so many of us. Irrfan Khan, you will truly be missed. Condolences to the family.”
Rahul Gandhi, a politician in India recounted that Khan was a “versatile and talented actor” who would be “greatly missed” as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal explained that India had lost “one of the most exceptional actors of our time.”
Irrfan Khan had earlier revealed in March 2018 that he had been diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumor -A condition in which the neuroendocrine cells develop into tumors. His recognition of his health status after immense treatment and reasonable recovered had prompted him to shoot Angrezi Medium. The outbreak of COVID-19 had unfortunately hindered the release of the movie.
According to Khan, in 2013, he told the Guardian that “I always object to the word Bollywood.”
“I don’t think it’s fair to have that name. Because that industry has its own technique, its own way of making films that has nothing to do with aping Hollywood. It originates in Parsi theatre,” he said.
The Bollywood mainstay was a son of a tyre seller who was born in 1966. He has had his fair share of highs and lows, having failed as a cricketer, he went to a film school and that is how he found his path to the movie industry.
“I came into this industry to tell stories and do cinema and I was stuck in television,” Khan Irrfan told the Guardian.
The death of Irrfan Khan will be most affected by his wife, Sutapa Sikdar, and two sons Babil and Ayan.
